Troop 654 focuses on high adventure. In 2023, the troop participated in two BSA high adventure camps – Maine High Adventure and Sea Base. In Maine, the scouts traversed the Aroostook and St. Croix rivers and hiked Mount Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine and the northern end of the Appalachian Trail. In the Virgin Islands the scouts paddleboard, ocean kayak and more. The troop is actively planning the Philmont expedition in 2024.
Summer camp is an important part of scouting. Every year, Troop 654 scouts spend six nights at Rodney Scout Reservation located in the town of North East, MD. Camp Rodney as a dedicated program for new scouts (“Brownseas”) to help them learn the basics of scoutings and earn the Swimming and Nature merit badges. Older scouts can take advantage of the Chesapeake Bay and learn canoeing, kayaking or small boat sailing. Or take advantage of other opportunities to earn merit badges in rock climbing, archery, or rifle shooting.
The troop is also committed to community service. Every year, scouts participate in a broad range of community projects including: Scouting for Food, conservation projects, Eagle Projects, and providing meals for those less fortunate.
